Blog Post

Why yoga? Why not running or weight lifting? These are questions that I have been asked before, and as a former and dedicated long distance runner, and also an obsessed long distance cyclist, I get it.

If the goal easy to see results, one may think that a more intense activity it will yield quicker, or better weight loss results.

Personally, I did not run 50 to 70 miles per week, or biked an average of 50 to 70 miles daily for weight loss or any other visible results, but for the positive psychological impact that these activities had on me.

The exhaustion of the activity, with the release of endorphins made any symptoms of stress and anxiety go away, and my mind felt at ease, for a bit at least. The thing about these more intense activities is that they have a similar effect to medication, because they do not retrain the mind or emotional body, the symptoms will come back, and every time I would go for a 10mile run to make sure they didn’t stick around for long.

They can also put a lot of wear and tear on the body, joints, muscles, tendons, etc. They demand a lot from the body, but do not provide opportunity for restoration, rebalancing, or any of the other elements that one can experience with yoga.

For me, there was definitely something missing, something that yoga can offer me, and you…. a better understanding of the connection between body, mind, and spirit. To be more specific, when talking about the body I am  not only referring to how muscles are toned, built, and even stretched, but I am also referring to what we do to keep them healthy and happy, In addition, yoga cares for the nervous system as well as organ function, something that few activities acknowledge.

You see, while all exercise is great for the body, few physical activities really pay attention to the wellbeing of the nervous system or even the proper function of our internal organs. Running marathons and going on 100mile bike loops did not bring me inward, only outward.

Yoga is more than poses, stretches, and fancy flows, it is the wire that allows us to reach full connectivity between the physical and the etheric bodies, soothing the Pranayama Kosha (energetic body), while activating the physical body, to create opportunity for a complete reset experience, and a reprograming of the mind in ways that bring life long, positive change.

Yoga is understanding how the body functions and what we can do to keep it in optimal condition for a long, healthy and happy life. It is investing in ourselves to helps us feel inspired, to never have to compromise what we want to do for what we are able to do, because with yoga, it is possible to keep going, especially in our golden years.

Western medicine is finally beginning to realize that the ancient practice of yoga can complement all fields of healthcare, particularly when it comes to treatment of patients with serious conditions, like Osteoporosis, cancer, surgery recovery, and more.

Instead of rambling on about yoga from a Yogi point of view, I am including this interesting article from the New York Times about Yoga and Osteoporosis, which describes one of the many ways in which yoga can help make life better, by improving bone mass for patients with such a debilitating disease.
